Tollywood’s young star Vijay Deverakonda is gearing up for the release of his much-awaited film Kingdom, slated to hit the screens on July 31. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film has already generated huge buzz. As part of the promotions, the makers hosted a special podcast called “Kingdom Boys,” where director Sandeep Reddy Vanga engaged in a light-hearted conversation with Vijay and Gowtam.
During the chat, Sandeep asked Gowtam why he chose Vijay as the lead for Kingdom. Gowtam responded by recalling a memorable incident from years ago.
“Vijay might not even remember this,” Gowtam began. “At that time, I hadn’t even directed my first film. I wanted to narrate a story to him, even before Pelli Choopulu had released. But it didn’t work out.
On the day Pelli Choopulu released, that same evening, we called Vijay to my office in Manikonda. Sanjeev, who studied with Vijay in Puttaparthi, introduced us. But since the film had just released, Vijay’s phone was buzzing with calls and messages non-stop,” Gowtam said with a smile.
“Still, I started narrating the story. Within 10–15 minutes, I realized he was completely distracted. At that moment, our office boy came in with samosas. Vijay was eating a samosa with one hand, checking his phone with the other, and half-listening to my story,” Gowtam laughed.
“I thought he would ask me a question, but instead, he asked for another samosa! After finishing the second one, he said, ‘I have to leave now, let’s meet later,’ and walked out. That day, I wished I had finished the story. Our office boy was so disappointed—he kept saying, ‘We usually get one samosa each, but he ate two and didn’t even listen to the story!’” Gowtam recalled humorously.
“After that, I tried many times to reach out, but it didn’t work out. That’s why the project Raava never happened. Years later, I finally approached him again, and this time it all fell into place with Kingdom,” Gowtam added.
What began as a missed opportunity years ago has now turned into a promising collaboration. Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, is all set for release on July 31.
