There have been beef-eaters in India ever since foreigners set foot on this country. But the majority of Indians are Hindus who look upon the cow as a sacred animal and hence consider it a sin to harm the cow forget about eating its meat. Nevertheless, it is the individual’s choice to determine what constitutes his diet. It is his personal thing. But there is a difference between having certain practices or customs in private and openly brandishing them even if it hurts the feelings of the majority of people. Osmania University is one place which is always in the news for the wrong reasons. It seems everything take place there except education.
Once again, the peaceful atmosphere of Hyderabad is in danger of being threatened by the decision of some student groups of OU. They have decided to organize a beef festival and also a marathon run prior to the event to popularize it. The student groups say that it is intended to convey their right to eat whatever they want. That is fine but why this unwarranted show of strength? You can bring beef to your hostel room and eat it in the privacy of your room. Why conduct a huge festival and make a mockery of the beliefs of so many Hindus? Is it not akin to throwing an open challenge at them? Last year as well, backed by people like Kanchi Ilaiah, they conducted a beef festival on campus that turned violent as the organizing students and ABVP clashed.
