Days after The New York Times accused Elon Musk of using illegal drugs while involved in Donald Trump’s campaign, the U.S. President has addressed speculation surrounding Musk’s conduct during his White House tenure.
When asked whether Musk had used drugs while serving as a special government official in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump responded, “I really don’t know, I don’t think so, I hope not.”
The New York Times report, published on May 30, claimed Musk had been using ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms — substances allegedly linked to his reported bladder issues. Notably, the report surfaced the same day Musk stepped down from his position in DOGE.
At a farewell ceremony held in the Oval Office, Musk dismissed the allegations, taking a swipe at the Times for its past reporting on the “Russiagate” controversy. He later took to X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The New York Times was lying their a** off. I tried prescription ketamine a few years ago and said so on X, so this isn’t even news. It helps me get out of dark mental holes, but I haven’t taken it since then.”
Musk has previously said he’s been subjected to random drug tests — especially after his controversial appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast — and claimed all results came back negative. He emphasized that his grueling schedule and high-profile responsibilities make regular drug use implausible.
Trump’s measured defense of Musk comes despite recent tensions between the two, following Musk’s public criticism of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which he called a “disgusting abomination.” However, Musk has since deleted several critical posts aimed at the President, signaling a possible thaw in their relationship.
At the June 9 event, Trump concluded his remarks about Musk by saying, “I wish him well … I just wish him well, very well, actually.”
