US President Donald Trump criticized NATO countries on Friday for their unwillingness to support the US in its ongoing military operation against Iran. Calling the alliance a “paper tiger,” Trump wrote on Truth Social that NATO members were hesitant to intervene in efforts to stop a “Nuclear Powered Iran.” He added, “So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!”
His remarks came after Emmanuel Macron stated on social media that France’s support for Ukraine amid Russia’s aggression would not waver, even in light of the conflict involving Iran. Macron also criticized vessels violating international sanctions and profiting from the ongoing war.
Meanwhile, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Canada issued a joint statement pledging to ensure safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Friedrich Merz noted that these efforts would depend on the cessation of active combat disrupting movement in the waterway.
This is not the first time Trump has targeted NATO over their reluctance to join US-led operations in Iran. Earlier, he stated on Truth Social that most NATO allies did not want to engage with Washington’s military campaign against Iran’s “terrorist regime,” despite broad Western agreement on countering Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump further criticized NATO as a “one-way street,” noting that the US spends hundreds of billions annually protecting these countries while receiving little support in return. He urged nations including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to deploy naval forces to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that they should protect their own interests and energy supply routes.
