Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a libel lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, its reporters, and associated media companies, according to court documents filed in Miami, Florida. The suit names two Wall Street Journal journalists, Dow Jones & Company, News Corp, and media executive Rupert Murdoch as defendants.
The legal action follows a report published by the Wall Street Journal alleging that Trump, in 2003, sent a birthday greeting to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The report described the greeting as including a sexually suggestive drawing, with the Journal stating that “a pair of small arcs denotes the woman’s breasts, and the future president’s signature is a squiggly ‘Donald’ below her waist, mimicking pubic hair.” The card was reportedly accompanied by the message: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.”
Trump has denied the authenticity of the letter and condemned the story as false and defamatory. He responded publicly via his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring his intention to pursue legal action. “Mr. Murdoch stated that he would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so … Instead they are going with a false, malicious, defamatory story anyway,” Trump wrote.
The lawsuit highlights ongoing tensions between Trump and major media organizations, particularly regarding coverage he deems inaccurate or damaging. Neither the Wall Street Journal nor the named defendants have issued an official statement in response to the filing as of now.
