Washington, Sep 13 (IANS) – US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in New York, just days after an Israeli airstrike targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, according to local media reports.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is also expected to attend the meeting.

Earlier on Friday, the Qatari prime minister held roughly an hour-long meeting at the White House with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions were described as “very positive,” focusing on Qatar’s role in promoting peace in the Middle East and potential defense cooperation between the two countries.

Following the White House session, Trump and Al Thani are expected to have dinner together, joined by top Trump adviser and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Al Thani’s visit comes just ahead of an emergency Arab summit called by Qatar in response to Tuesday’s Israeli airstrike. Trump expressed regret over the strike’s location and assured Qatari leaders by phone that such an incident would not occur again on Qatari soil.

Qatar has accused Israel of attempting to undermine peace efforts but reaffirmed its commitment to mediating ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas.
