Stranger Things Finale Faces AI Script Controversy

When AI and GPT technologies began trending, there was widespread debate about whether they would replace human jobs. Hollywood screenwriters almost resisted this change, even going on strike. However, in an ironic twist, the makers of Netflix’s Stranger Things are now facing accusations of using AI to script the series.
The controversy arose following the release of the documentary Stranger Things: One Last Adventure, which reignited discussions about the show’s polarizing finale. Many viewers claimed that the script for the finale was not entirely human-written and that AI tools like ChatGPT were relied upon. The documentary featured visuals showing multiple ChatGPT tabs open on a computer used by the creators, fueling these speculations.
Social media erupted with reactions. One user tweeted, “The Great Duffer Brothers used ChatGPT to write Stranger Things Season 5. WTF man, now we know why season 5 sucked. #StrangerThings5.” Another wrote, “The Duffer Brothers were literally using ChatGPT and Reddit while writing this season, particularly the finale. No wonder it’s complete chaos.”
Despite these claims, many fans expressed satisfaction with the finale episode, praising the ending. Supporters argue that if AI helps in creating engaging scripts, it can be a positive trend. After all, the creators provide the input and guide the AI, and the quality of the output depends entirely on how it is used.
Set in the nostalgic landscape of 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, Stranger Things follows a close-knit group of friends whose lives are turned upside down when their friend Will Byers mysteriously disappears. Since its debut in 2016, the series ran for nine years, concluding in 2025.
