Ugly Face: Is This The Real Side of Indian IT Giants?

A pink slip in an IT organization is the biggest scare. The moment a pink slip is issued to an employee, it is more or less a debilitating blow on his future chances of ever getting a hi-flying job. But then, the American companies, since most Indians were and are employed by them usually claim a company’s bad quarter to let go of a good number of people.
During boom time for Indian IT employees, American employees would be ‘Bangalored’ or given the pink slip once the jobs shifted to BPOs in Bangalore and other cities where IT thrived in India. Now, years later, looks like our very own Indian IT organizations, all of which are MNCs themselves are repeating the pattern.
Only this time, it is our own Indians who are being given the pink slips. And in the Indian setting, it is being projected as a necessary step to gently shove out those who have been ‘under performing’ consistently. There have an increasing number of instances where large Indian IT companies have fired people despite making huge profits quarter after quarter.
Media is full of reports of large numbers of employees being fired or being laid off. Recently, TCS announced that it issued termination letters to a good number of its employees. Immediately, other IT giants like Wipro, Citrex, IBM and other companies followed suit. Surprisingly, while they are firing on one hand, they have also been hiring at the same pace.
The IT industry analysts say there is a reason behind the pattern. The IT giants get good incentives and huge subsidies from the government if they continue to show that they are into hiring large number of people. Similarly, it would work to their advantage if they show their clients that they have a large pool of qualified IT professionals on their rolls.
Added to this, the companies hire in large numbers and then put a considerable number of employees on the ‘bench’. Later, many of these people are slowly booted out of the company by citing under performance as the primary reason. The biggest reason for this situation are the various loopholes in the IT industry laws which the organizations use to their advantage.
Since the laws are mostly applicable for recruitment and since there are no clear cut rules for employee termination, the organizations are getting their way at the cost of employees. Unfortunately, this lacuna has become a huge curse to aspiring employees.
