The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Thursday launched “Udai,” the official Aadhaar mascot, aimed at simplifying public understanding of Aadhaar services and promoting responsible usage.
Designed as a resident-facing communication companion, Udai will help explain technical aspects of Aadhaar—such as biometric updates, authentication processes, new security features, and safe usage practices—in a more relatable and human-friendly manner.
Announcing the launch, UIDAI said the mascot has been created to make Aadhaar-related information more accessible to citizens. “The UIDAI today launched the Aadhaar mascot, a new resident-facing communication companion to simplify public understanding of Aadhaar services. The Aadhaar mascot named Udai will help make Aadhaar-related information more relatable and people-friendly,” the authority said in a statement.
The Udai platform was unveiled by UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra at a function held in Thiruvananthapuram. Mishra noted that the initiative is built around people’s interests and aims to make Aadhaar communication simpler, clearer, and more engaging for citizens across the country.
To develop the mascot, UIDAI had earlier launched national design and naming competitions on the MyGov platform, inviting citizens to contribute ideas and creative concepts. The initiative reportedly received 875 entries from participants across diverse professions, including students, designers, and working professionals. After a detailed review process, Udai was co-created by blending public input with official oversight.
In recent years, Aadhaar has evolved beyond basic identity verification to become a cornerstone of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). It now plays a central role in financial inclusion, governance delivery, and secure digital transactions.
With the introduction of Udai, UIDAI is signalling a renewed focus on public outreach and digital literacy, using visual storytelling to educate citizens on how Aadhaar functions and how it can be used safely. The mascot is expected to play a key role in upcoming awareness campaigns aligned with Digital India and broader digital identity education initiatives.
