UK Visa Rules Slash Indian Applications

The United Kingdom’s evolving immigration policies are reshaping migration trends from India, with significant declines in visa applications across key categories.

Home Office data indicates that Health and Care Worker visa applications from main applicants dropped sharply from 18,300 in August 2023 to just 1,300 in July 2025. Dependants mirrored this decline, falling from 23,300 to 4,900 during the same period. This downturn follows intensified compliance checks on employers, tighter scrutiny in the health and social care sector, and the closure of overseas recruitment for care workers under this visa category. While some in-country workers may still switch visas until July 2028, new entrants face substantial barriers.

Skilled Worker visas have also contracted. Applications from Indian nationals averaged 6,000 per month in 2022–2024 but dipped to 4,900 by July 2025, after a brief spike in April 2024. The UK has raised the minimum salary threshold to £41,700 and tightened skill requirements, with limited exceptions for roles on the Immigration Salary or Temporary Shortage lists.

Student migration patterns have shifted as well. Sponsored study visa applications fell slightly to 428,900 in the year ending July 2025, while applications from dependants plunged 86% after rules introduced in January 2024 restricted eligibility to postgraduate researchers and government-funded scholars.

Family visa applications fluctuated sharply—rising to 12,700 in April 2024 ahead of income threshold changes before settling at 8,100 by July 2025—reflecting the sensitivity of this route to policy reforms.

Meanwhile, temporary work visas such as the Youth Mobility Scheme and Seasonal Worker routes continue to follow seasonal trends. Applications under the Youth Mobility Scheme fell 10% to 22,200, despite the India Young Professionals Scheme’s launch in 2023, while Seasonal Worker visas increased by 9% to 38,600 within quota limits.

These shifts carry broad implications. Indian health professionals, a cornerstone of UK migration, are increasingly looking toward Canada, Australia, and Europe. Students and dependants face new barriers, and professionals encounter rising thresholds in a more competitive visa environment.
