Unchecked Power Puts Andhra Pradesh Democracy at Risk

Power has always been the biggest attraction in politics. However, when power becomes unchecked and limitless, it turns dangerous. This is exactly what many believe is unfolding in Andhra Pradesh today.

Since coming to power, the ruling dispensation appears to have shifted its focus from governance to systematically targeting the opposition. Instead of healthy political debate and democratic engagement, the political landscape is increasingly marked by intimidation, attacks, and open displays of violence.

Recent incidents involving assaults on opposition leaders and damage to their properties have triggered serious concern among citizens. What is even more alarming is the apparent role of the system itself. Law enforcement agencies and authorities—meant to uphold law and order—are increasingly perceived as silent spectators. This perceived inaction has instilled fear among the public and eroded confidence in democratic institutions.

Democracy can function effectively only when power is balanced and the opposition is allowed to operate freely without fear. When those in power begin to behave like emperors, believing they are beyond accountability, society inevitably pays a heavy price.

The current situation in Andhra Pradesh serves as a clear warning sign. If unchecked power continues to dominate politics, violence will intensify, dissent will be crushed, and democracy itself will be pushed into dangerous territory.
