The Union Cabinet, led by the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened on Thursday to discuss key policy decisions for the coming days. Two major developments have emerged from this meeting, which have garnered significant attention in the media.
In a significant move to boost the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the cabinet has approved an allocation of Rs 3900 crores for the construction of a third launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This new launch pad aims to provide infrastructure for ISRO’s next-generation launch vehicles (NGLVs) and will also serve as a backup for the existing second launch pad during emergencies. This decision enhances India’s capabilities to support future human spaceflight missions and strengthens the country’s position in space exploration. The completion of this third launch pad is expected to take four years.
In another noteworthy development, the Union Cabinet has decided to establish a committee for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, which will review the salaries and pensions of more than one crore central government employees and pensioners, effective from January 1, 2026. The government will form a board, including a chairman and two members, to formulate a new salary structure for serving and retired employees from various central government departments. The existing pay commission, implemented by the Congress government in 2014, came into effect in 2016, and the revision is now due for 2026. The recommendations of this committee will cover allowances and other perks for all employees.
