The Houthi group has reported that US forces conducted 22 airstrikes on its positions in northern Yemen’s Sanaa and Saada provinces over the course of several hours. The strikes primarily targeted areas in the Sanhan district southeast of Sanaa, as well as the Bani Matar district west of the capital, and struck Saada, a stronghold of the Houthis, with 15 bombings. These strikes occurred shortly after two individuals were killed and a child was injured by US airstrikes in the Bani Qa’is region of Yemen’s Hajjah province.
The US military resumed airstrikes against Houthi-controlled regions in northern Yemen in mid-March. The US strikes are part of an effort to deter the group from attacking US military vessels and Israeli targets in the Red Sea, as well as to secure international shipping lanes. In response, the Houthis reiterated their support for Gaza and escalated their attacks on Israeli targets and US military vessels.
US President Donald Trump has declared that US strikes on the Houthis will persist until they cease attacking US ships. Additionally, the Houthis reported shooting down a US MQ-9 drone over Yemen’s Marib province, using a locally manufactured missile.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen is part of a broader regional struggle, with the Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group, locked in a prolonged war against the internationally recognized government of Yemen, supported by a Saudi-led coalition. The situation has drawn in various international actors, further complicating the geopolitical dynamics of the region.
