US Eye on Greenland Again, ₹60 Lakh Crore Speculation Sparks Global Buzz

The administration led by former US President Donald Trump has once again triggered global debate with reports suggesting a renewed interest in acquiring Greenland. The idea of the United States purchasing another territory has resurfaced, drawing widespread attention due to its scale and geopolitical implications.

Speculation making the rounds estimates that such a move could cost close to $700 billion, which translates to approximately ₹60 lakh crore. However, experts stress that this figure is purely notional and not based on any official assessment or negotiation.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, covers an area of over 2.16 million square kilometres but has a population of only around 56,000 people. While it enjoys self-governance, Greenland remains an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, meaning any transfer of control would require approval from both the Danish government and Greenland’s local administration.

The island holds immense strategic value due to its location in the Arctic region and its vast reserves of rare earth minerals, oil, and other untapped natural resources. The United States already has a military footprint in Greenland through the Thule Air Base, underscoring its geopolitical importance.

Despite renewed discussions, Danish authorities have consistently stated that Greenland is not for sale under any circumstances. Political analysts maintain that there is currently no legal, diplomatic, or political process underway to facilitate such a transaction, making the reports speculative rather than actionable.
