US Government Shutdown Temporarily Affects TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

It is well known that the Donald Trump administration faced several volatile moments regarding government shutdowns in the United States. On multiple occasions, parts of the federal government have temporarily ceased operations due to funding gaps.

Currently, a partial government shutdown in the U.S. has temporarily affected certain airport security programs. A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass a funding bill, leaving some federal agencies without the funds needed to continue normal operations.

In this instance, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is impacted. This department oversees airport security and border control, which has led to temporary pauses in services at some airport enrollment centers for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs.

TSA PreCheck, managed by the Transportation Security Administration, allows approved travelers to move through airport security more quickly without removing shoes, belts, or laptops. Global Entry, run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, enables international travelers to reenter the U.S. faster using automated kiosks.

Due to the shutdown, new applications, in-person interviews, and some membership renewals for these programs may be delayed or temporarily suspended at certain airports. However, travelers with active TSA PreCheck or Global Entry memberships can continue using their benefits without interruption.

The larger concern is that federal employees associated with these programs may be furloughed or working without pay until funding is restored, which can create delays and inconvenience for travelers. Once Congress passes a funding bill and agencies fully reopen, these services are expected to resume normal operations.
