US Lawmaker Urges Diplomacy to Avert US–China Trade War

US Congressman Ami Bera has cautioned against escalating US–China trade tensions, warning that tariff wars would ultimately harm American consumers. In an exclusive interview with IANS, the India-American lawmaker emphasized the importance of diplomacy over economic confrontations.

Bera, a Democrat from California, noted that discussions on trade were also relevant to India during his recent visit. He suggested that President Donald Trump meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to avoid both a trade war and the risk of a kinetic conflict, stressing that tit-for-tat measures would not benefit either country.

His remarks came in response to Trump’s recent social media posts announcing 100% tariffs on Chinese products starting November 1 and imposing export controls on critical software. Trump also threatened to cancel a planned meeting with Xi, accusing China of “hostile” trade behavior after Beijing expanded export controls on rare-earth elements.

Trump described China’s actions as “extraordinarily aggressive” and a “moral disgrace,” while also indicating that Washington could target exports of airplane parts. He emphasized that his relationship with Xi is strong and framed the Chinese measures as a response to global circumstances rather than a direct provocation against the US.

Both nations have been negotiating trade terms since April, with a temporary truce set to expire on November 10. Trump had initially planned to meet Xi on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in South Korea from October 28 to November 1.

Bera urged the White House to prioritize diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation and mitigate potential negative impacts on American consumers.
