Rescue operations are going on in full swing in rain-hit Chennai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who visited the capital city of Tamil Nadu announced immediate relief of Rs 1000 Crore. More than 4,000 people have been rescued by the Army in the first two days of the relief effort since large parts of Chennai went underwater following torrential showers this week.
The US government is lending helping hand for Chennai flood victims. “The US stands ready to assist the people of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as well as the Government of India as they face the worst flooding in decades. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the people who have perished in these floods, and our thoughts are with those families who are still trapped and whose livelihoods are affected,” State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.
Chennai has a US consulate and its General issued an Emergency Message for US citizens on Thursday, obviously warning of the severe flooding taking place in the region.
Toner asked both Indians and American citizens in Chennai that they should monitor the consulate general’s website for updates.
