The torrential rains have wreaked havoc on several areas in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. The entire civic life has come to a stand still and thousands of residents were stranded on completely immersed Chennai roads, waiting for someone to offer them food, water and other basic amenities. With shops and markets remaining closed for several days, even those who have been staying home are left with no vegetables and other provisions.
In the times when compassion was highly needed, what several vegetable vendors did in Chennai has touched everyone. A large group of vegetable vendors have been traveling several miles in difficult rainy conditions to buy vegetables from the Koyambedu wholesale market and are selling them in several areas in the city at normal rates without increasing prices even when the demand was so high.
On the other hand, there were also reports that some greedy marketeers have been selling 1 liter milk at Rs.150 and even several boat operators have been charging anywhere between 3,000 to 5,000 to rescue people stranded in flood waters.
