After S.S. Rajamouli revolutionized Telugu cinema with the Baahubali franchise and introduced the concept of cinematic universes to the South Indian industry, the trend has taken firm root across multiple film industries—particularly in Tamil cinema.
Among the prominent names leading this wave are Vetrimaaran and Lokesh Kanagaraj, two filmmakers carving out their own universes but with very different approaches and styles.
Vetrimaaran is reportedly working on expanding his gritty crime saga into what is now being referred to as the Vada Chennai Universe. Starting with Vada Chennai 2, which brings back Dhanush in the lead, the filmmaker is expected to branch out the narrative with interconnected characters and spin-offs, potentially featuring actors like Simbu. His vision appears to center around strong, character-driven narratives set against deeply rooted local backdrops, staying true to his brand of raw, realistic cinema.
In contrast, Lokesh Kanagaraj has already made massive inroads with his Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU)—featuring action-packed blockbusters like Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. With explosive storytelling, larger-than-life characters, and a clear intent to reach pan-India audiences, Lokesh’s universe leans heavily into mass appeal and high-octane entertainment.
When it comes to storytelling depth and narrative complexity, Vetrimaaran is widely considered one of the most skilled filmmakers of his generation. His films often resonate with critical acclaim and cultural depth. However, in terms of commercial reach and fanbase pull, Lokesh currently enjoys a significant lead. His films generate massive box office numbers and are supported by an enthusiastic, nationwide fan following.
To sum it up: Vetrimaaran’s universe may set new standards for immersive, realistic storytelling, while Lokesh’s cinematic universe continues to dominate with its mass-market appeal and commercial strength. Both filmmakers are pushing Tamil cinema into exciting new territory—just in very different directions.
