Acclaimed actress Vidya Balan, known for her powerful and versatile roles in Bollywood, recently revealed a lesser-known and painful chapter from the early days of her career in the South Indian film industry.
In a heartfelt interview, Vidya recalled how she lost over eight film offers after being unfairly branded a ‘jinx’ when Chakram, a Malayalam film in which she was cast opposite superstar Mohanlal, was shelved indefinitely. The film, which had generated a lot of buzz, never took off due to unforeseen circumstances — but the blame, shockingly, was pinned on her.
“People started calling me a jinx,” Vidya shared. The label not only hurt her emotionally but also derailed her career in South cinema. Producers began avoiding her, hesitant to cast her despite her evident talent. “It left a deep scar,” she admitted, explaining how difficult it was for a newcomer to face such rejection based on superstition rather than skill.
But Vidya didn’t let the harsh phase break her spirit. With unwavering determination, she shifted her focus to Bollywood. Her big break came in 2005 with Parineeta, a performance that earned her critical and audience acclaim. What followed was a streak of impactful roles in films like Kahaani, Tumhari Sulu, and Shakuntala Devi, establishing her as a champion of strong, female-led narratives in Indian cinema.
Reflecting on her journey, Vidya said her struggles serve as a reminder of resilience and the importance of not giving up. She encouraged aspiring actors to persevere through difficult times, emphasizing that talent and hard work will eventually get their due.
