Vijay Antony’s Margan Faces a Big Test Tomorrow

Share

More than a decade ago, Vijay Antony made waves with his blockbuster hit Bichagadu, and it’s surprising that even today he manages to retain some hold on the market. Since then, despite a few average movies, he hasn’t had a notable hit. Yet Vijay Antony continues to appear before the audience regularly, and his new film Margan is set to hit screens tomorrow. Although the promotions have made some noise, they haven’t really reached the masses. Even with the support of distributors like Asian Suresh Entertainments, drawing decent openings looks like a challenge — especially with the simultaneous Tamil and Telugu release.

On one side, Kubera is going strong, and on the other, Kannappa is releasing grandly. Amidst these biggies, Margan faces a tough task of making its mark. Frankly, it’s difficult to recall the last genuine hit Vijay Antony scored — most of his recent movies vanished from theatres so quickly that people hardly remember them. Still, like Vikramarkudu, he’s not one to give up easily and keeps pushing ahead with new attempts. Interestingly, even though his market in Tamil and Telugu isn’t very strong anymore, he holds onto the belief that one big hit can change everything.

Making his directorial debut with Margan, veteran editor Leo John Paul — who has worked with noted filmmakers like Karthik Subbaraj — brings a unique edge to the film. Going by the trailer and promotional materials, the film looks intriguing. However, the title Margan, which is tough for Telugu audiences to pronounce or relate to, could have been adapted to something more familiar. Nevertheless, given the buzz around its different genre, there’s hope that Margan could surprise everyone.
