If the latest buzz from industry circles is anything to go by, Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda might be regretting a career decision that saw him turn down the lead role in Sekhar Kammula’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful film Kuberaa.
The central character, Deva, portrayed by Dhanush in the film, was reportedly first offered to Vijay. The makers were keen to cast someone with strong mass appeal, and Vijay fit the bill perfectly. However, the Dear Comrade actor is said to have declined the role, fearing that his fans and core audience might not accept him playing a beggar on screen.
Though Vijay had earlier collaborated with director Sekhar Kammula in Life Is Beautiful, he was reportedly hesitant this time around. Given his recent string of flops, he may have felt that taking on an unconventional role at this point in his career was too risky. Sources suggest that Vijay believed the character wouldn’t align well with his current image or trajectory in the industry.
Eventually, the role went to Dhanush, who embraced the challenging character and delivered a power-packed performance. The film Kuberaa went on to become a huge hit, raking in over ₹120 crores worldwide. Dhanush’s portrayal of the beggar-turned-revolutionary has drawn widespread critical acclaim and audience appreciation.
In hindsight, Vijay’s decision is being seen as a missed opportunity, especially considering how the film and Dhanush’s performance have resonated with viewers. While it’s unclear how the film might have shaped up with Vijay in the lead, Kuberaa has certainly turned out to be a landmark project — and one that many believe could have been a game-changer for him.
