Before Arjun Reddy shook up Indian cinema and before the stardom that followed, Vijay Deverakonda was just one among thousands—another hopeful face chasing a dream. At the launch of Dil Raju Dreams, a new talent platform in Hyderabad, Vijay took a moment to step away from the limelight and speak directly to the aspiring artists in the crowd. And instead of glamor, he offered something rarer: honesty.
He spoke about 2012—a year when he had just graduated from college, searching desperately for any way into the film industry. “I used to refresh Idlebrain every day looking for casting calls,” he recalled. One day, he spotted an audition notice for a Sekhar Kammula film. Without hesitation, he applied.
What followed wasn’t a fairy tale. It was six months of uncertainty—auditions, callbacks, and waiting. Out of 20,000 applicants, only 12 were selected. Vijay was one of them. So was another rising star, Naveen Polishetty. The film? Life is Beautiful—a modest, coming-of-age drama that would give Vijay more than just screen time. “That small film gave me something big—purpose,” he said.
His words to the young dreamers in the audience weren’t rehearsed or flashy. They felt personal. “I know what it’s like to wait for that one phone call,” he said. “That one ‘yes’ can change your life.” And with Dil Raju launching a platform aimed at fresh talent, Vijay’s message resonated: “One day, someone sitting here will stand where I am, telling this same story—with your name in it.”
While his actual first film was Nuvvila, it was Life is Beautiful that became his compass. Since then, his journey has taken him from indie roles to national fame. He’s made his mark with films like The Family Star, made an appearance in Kalki 2898 AD, and is now gearing up for projects like Kingdom and a new film with Rahul Sankrithyan.
But none of this came overnight. It all started with a crowded audition room, a lot of waiting, and the persistence to show up—again and again.
