Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is heating up, with actor Vijay aggressively pushing his political agenda. However, political analysts believe that new entrants—whether film stars or professionals from other fields—face an uphill battle in securing a complete majority and seizing power independently.
A relevant comparison is Pawan Kalyan in Andhra Pradesh, who took nearly a decade to establish himself in politics. Initially contesting alone in the 2019 elections under the Janasena Party, he faced a significant defeat. Learning from that setback, Pawan later aligned with TDP and BJP, which eventually helped him secure the Deputy Chief Minister post in the ruling coalition.
A similar debate is now unfolding in Tamil Nadu. Vijay recently launched his political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. To strengthen his campaign, he has enlisted the expertise of political strategist Prashant Kishor.
With DMK firmly in power and AIADMK holding strong with over 25% vote share, reports suggest that Prashant Kishor has cautioned Vijay about the near impossibility of securing an outright majority. Even if TVK garners a respectable 20% vote share, it may still fall short of establishing itself as the main opposition, let alone forming the government.
Given this scenario, Prashant Kishor is said to have suggested an alliance with AIADMK. According to this strategy, the combined vote share of AIADMK and TVK—along with smaller party support—could be enough to challenge DMK and form the next government. The proposed arrangement would see AIADMK leader Edappadi Palanisamy as Chief Minister while Vijay could take the Deputy CM post.
However, Vijay is reportedly hesitant about this proposal. Having stepped into politics with the ambition of winning independently, he now faces a critical decision. Should he follow a path similar to Pawan Kalyan’s and opt for a strategic alliance, or take the risk of contesting solo?
With elections fast approaching, the political ‘Powerstar Pressure’ on Vijay is bound to increase. His decision in the coming months could shape the future of his political career and Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics.
