Visa Appointment Delay Leaves NRI Stuck in India

A family emergency has turned into a major personal and professional crisis for a US-based NRI working on an H-1B visa.

The woman had travelled to India urgently to care for her critically ill mother. However, she is now unable to return to the United States because she cannot secure a visa appointment, leaving her stranded far from the life she built abroad.

The issue came to light after a Reddit user shared the story of their friend, explaining how the sudden trip to India has created serious complications.

“My friend had to fly to India urgently because her mother became very sick. Now she is stuck here and cannot get a visa appointment to return to the US. Her entire life is there — her home, job, and responsibilities. She still has to pay her mortgage, car loan and other bills,” the user wrote.

According to the post, the woman had spent several years building her life in the United States. But the lack of available visa appointments has left her uncertain about when she will be able to return.

The Reddit user said the situation has become extremely stressful, as the woman is now considering whether she may have to sell her house and manage her financial obligations from thousands of miles away.

“It is heartbreaking to see someone who did everything right end up in such a situation,” the user wrote, asking others online for advice.

Several users responded with sympathy and support. One commenter said the woman should not regret her decision to travel to India to be with her mother during a critical time.

“She was there for her mother when she needed her the most. She should be proud of herself for being a devoted daughter. This situation may change the course of her life, but hopefully things will improve,” the user wrote, also suggesting she could explore the option of temporarily working from India.

Another user pointed out the financial risks immigrants sometimes face when they make major investments while living abroad on temporary visas.

“This is why I avoided buying property or making big investments until I got permanent residency,” the person commented.

Others said the story reflects the harsh realities many immigrants face while working overseas.

“This is the difficult reality of being an immigrant. Your life can suddenly come to a standstill because of visa issues, even after years of hard work,” another commenter wrote.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding her return to the US, many online users encouraged the woman not to regret her decision, saying that being with family during a crisis is always the right choice.
