Vishnu Manchu’s Kannappa: Star Power Fails to Save Box Office

Share

Vishnu Manchu has been struggling to deliver a box office hit in recent years. In a determined effort to revive his career, he went all-in on Kannappa, making a massive investment with the backing of his own funds and those of his father, Mohan Babu.

Realizing that his name alone wouldn’t secure strong openings, Vishnu strategically roped in top stars like Prabhas, Mohanlal, and Akshay Kumar to generate nationwide buzz. In that aspect, he succeeded — Kannappa became the first project to earn him recognition beyond the Telugu-speaking audience.

However, despite the star power and initial hype, the film underperformed at the box office. The Hindi version, featuring Akshay Kumar and Prabhas, recorded poor collections, and the Malayalam release, which highlighted Mohanlal, also failed to make an impact.

Globally, Kannappa grossed around ₹42 crore — Vishnu’s highest in recent times — yet it still resulted in significant theatrical losses given its hefty budget.

To mitigate the financial setback, Vishnu is now focusing on maximizing returns through OTT and satellite rights. Although a streaming deal is already secured, he is reportedly in talks to renegotiate for a higher price to offset some of the losses.

The final picture regarding the film’s financial recovery will become clearer once all non-theatrical revenue streams are fully realized.
