Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp is testing a new username-based communication feature that allows users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. This move is designed to enhance user privacy while enabling flexible interactions across the platform.
Traditionally reliant on phone numbers since its launch, WhatsApp’s shift to username identifiers marks a significant update. The feature will allow users to make voice and video calls using a unique username, eliminating the need to disclose personal contact information.
A WhatsApp spokesperson said, “We’re excited to bring usernames to WhatsApp in the future to help people connect with new friends, groups, and businesses without sharing their phone numbers. This feature will add an extra layer of privacy and make it easier to reach businesses on WhatsApp.”
The feature, initially reported for WhatsApp Business accounts, will also be available for standard users as an optional privacy setting. Media reports suggest the rollout may begin around June 2026, with the option to reserve usernames possibly opening beforehand.
For regular users, the username will serve as their identity, enabling them to connect with others or join groups without exchanging phone numbers. For businesses, WhatsApp will introduce a Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID), a unique identifier allowing them to communicate with users without requiring phone numbers. Brand handles like @HDFCBank will make it easier for customers to find and message businesses directly, enhancing engagement while maintaining privacy.
Overall, the username feature aims to provide users with more control over their personal information and offer businesses a way to strengthen brand identity while facilitating safer, more flexible interactions.
