What was the reason for KCR’s offer to join the NDA? Many political analysts feel that the primary reason behind his offer was the worry that Andhra Pradesh might still be accorded a special status by the Centre.
If that happened, then there would be a large scale exodus of majority companies from Hyderabad to AP. In short, ‘Brand Hyderabad’ would take a complete beating. KCR cannot allow that to happen, especially at this juncture.
Already the realty sector has witnessed a 46% drop in Hyderabad compared to the previous year. The secondary factor is that KCR needs funds on a large scale for his fanciful projects such as Mission Kakatiya etc. Mission Kakatiya alone would cost Rs 40000 crore and KCR had recently requested Modi to pitch in with Rs 20000 crore.
Hence, the friendly overtures to Modi who he had earlier labeled a ‘Sannasi’ and fascist. Finally, being part of the Union Cabinet would also help to tide over allegations of corruption in his schemes apart from ensuring Telangana gets a healthy dose of funds for his schemes.
And last but not least, it would help propel his daughter, Kavitha on to the national stage. But the BJP were not fools to be taken in by KCR’s proposal. It is only the TRS that would benefit from an alliance with BJP. The BJP stands to gain nothing from the TRS. They wisely declined KCR’s opportunistic offer.
