Why Sridevi Rejected Baahubali: Boney Kapoor’s Clarification

Baahubali (2015) remains one of the biggest milestones in Indian cinema. The two-part epic not only redefined filmmaking standards but also gave actors like Ramya Krishna immense recognition, especially for her powerful portrayal of Sivagami. Interestingly, the late legendary actress Sridevi was originally approached for the role, but she eventually declined.

Over the years, rumors floated that Sridevi had made “unrealistic demands,” such as booking an entire hotel floor and asking for an unusually high paycheck. However, her husband Boney Kapoor has now dismissed these claims and offered his version of events.

In a recent interview, Boney revealed that the actual issue was with the fee offered. The producers of Baahubali had reportedly quoted less than what Sridevi was paid for English Vinglish. Since she was not a struggling actress and her presence would add immense value to the project, Boney felt it was only fair for her to quote a higher amount than her previous film. Unfortunately, this led to confusion and miscommunication, eventually keeping Sridevi out of the project.

Boney further clarified misconceptions about luxury demands by recalling the English Vinglish New York schedule:

He went on to claim that the producers misrepresented facts to both director Rajamouli and filmmaker K. Raghavendra Rao, creating unnecessary misunderstandings. According to him, Rajamouli was never part of the commercial discussions and left after the creative meeting, while the producers exaggerated the fee negotiations to others.

Boney Kapoor concluded by saying he had no regrets about Sridevi skipping the film, but expressed disappointment over how the matter was mishandled. Ultimately, he acknowledged that Ramya Krishna turned out to be the perfect Sivagami, adding, “I am not sure if Sridevi would have created the same aura.”
