Naga Chaitanya and Samantha’s iconic romantic drama Ye Maya Chesave is gearing up for a grand re-release on July 19th — nearly 15 years after it first captured hearts. The film marked the on-screen debut pairing of Chaitanya and Samantha, and went on to become a cult classic in Telugu cinema. As anticipation builds for its re-release, director Gautham Vasudev Menon shared some fascinating insights in a recent interview — including a surprising alternate climax that never made it to the final cut.
Gautham revealed that he had originally written the story with superstar Mahesh Babu in mind. The project was meant to be produced by Mahesh’s sister, Manjula, with Mahesh playing the lead. However, after hearing the narration, Mahesh politely turned it down, stating that he was more inclined toward doing an action film at the time. Gautham then approached another top Telugu star with the same story, but received a similar response.
With no takers among the big stars, Gautham decided to proceed with newcomers. The producers then suggested casting Naga Chaitanya, who was just beginning his career. This ultimately led to the creation of the Telugu version of Ye Maya Chesave, which became a major box-office success alongside its Tamil counterpart, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, starring Simbu.
One of the most intriguing parts of Gautham’s revelation was his original concept for the film’s climax. “In the first draft,” Gautham shared, “the heroine is getting married somewhere far away. The hero is on the sets of his debut film, in which Megastar Chiranjeevi is the lead. Chiranjeevi sir notices that the hero looks low-spirited and asks him what’s wrong. After learning about his lost love, Chiranjeevi arranges a helicopter for the hero, who then rushes to stop the wedding.”
Though this dramatic sequence never made it to the final film, fans will be excited to see the beloved romance return to the big screen. With nostalgia running high, Ye Maya Chesave is set to rekindle the emotions that made it a timeless love story for a whole generation.
