Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday urged devotees attending the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj to take a holy dip at the ghats nearest to them, advising against overcrowding at the Sangam Ghat due to the massive crowd. He reassured that the situation in Prayagraj remained under control, but the crowd size was overwhelming. He also mentioned that the saints from various Akharas had requested devotees to take their dip first, and once the crowds dispersed, the Akharas would proceed with their own ritual baths.
The Congress party, however, criticized both the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre over the “stampede-like” situation at the Sangam. They called for better management of the Maha Kumbh, suggesting the need for a more competent administrator than Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and demanded that the movement of VVIPs be halted to prevent further chaos.
The situation became tense when a “stampede-like” incident occurred at the Sangam, leading to fears of multiple casualties. This happened as millions of pilgrims gathered for the holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. In response, the Akharas canceled their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ for the occasion, though a large number of devotees continued to take dips at the Sangam and other ghats in the Mela area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been closely monitoring the situation. He spoke to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the incident and called for swift and effective action to ensure the safety of devotees.
