Telugu cinema categorizes its heroes based on market value, ranging from high-range superstars to medium and low-range actors. However, every actor aspires to break into the elite league, and mass-action films often serve as a stepping stone to elevate their market. Interestingly, the younger generation of Telugu heroes is increasingly drawn toward this genre, embracing the ‘mass’ appeal.
Actors like Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Sai Dharam Tej, and Naveen Polishetty have already established themselves with unique fan bases. However, their upcoming projects indicate a noticeable shift toward mass entertainers.
Naveen Polishetty, known for his meticulous script selection and blockbuster track record, is now venturing into mass-action cinema. His next film, Anaganaga Oka Raju, is expected to showcase commercial elements.
Similarly, Siddhu Jonnalagadda, who expanded his market with the DJ Tillu franchise, is looking to level up. While his upcoming projects Jack and Telusu Kada are romantic dramas, he has also signed a film with director Ravikanth Perepu, aiming to establish a mass-hero image.
Meanwhile, Sai Dharam Tej, who has consistently attempted to enhance his mass appeal, has high hopes for his next film, SYG – Sambarala Yeti Gattu. Despite previous efforts in the genre, he has struggled to boost his market. With SYG, he aims to turn the tide and cement his position in the mass-action space.
However, this strategy comes with its risks. Actors like Vishwak Sen have attempted similar transitions with films like Mechanic Rocky and Gangs of Godavari, but the results were underwhelming. This raises an important question—are these young heroes miscalculating audience preferences? While they have found success in unique, content-driven films, their mass-action endeavors may not resonate the same way. With established stars already dominating the genre, it remains to be seen whether audiences will accept these rising actors in larger-than-life action roles.
