The stage is set for a historic moment in Andhra Pradesh, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the grand relaunch of Amaravati capital works tomorrow. With expectations running high across the state, all eyes are on what the Prime Minister will announce for the long-delayed capital city project.
On the eve of Modi’s visit, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President YS Sharmila launched a sharp protest, accusing the Prime Minister of failing to fulfill his commitments made during the 2014 bifurcation of the state. Taking to social media, Sharmila said she would send a symbolic gift—soil from Amaravati—to remind the PM of the promises he made a decade ago.
“Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will you finally support Amaravati’s construction this time? Or will it be another symbolic gesture, like gifting us soil again?” Sharmila wrote, referencing Modi’s act of bringing soil from across India to the foundation ceremony in 2015—a gesture she now says “dashed the hopes” of Andhra people.
Demanding a formal assurance from the Prime Minister, Sharmila urged him to prevent any further betrayal of Andhra Pradesh. She emphasized that, under the AP Reorganization Act, the central government is responsible for building the state capital. As such, she called on Modi to commit Rs 1.5 lakh crore over the next three years to complete the Amaravati project.
Sharmila also insisted that Amaravati be granted legal status as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh, and appealed to the PM to finally deliver on the bifurcation promises that, she argued, have remained unfulfilled for the past 10 years.
As the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of Modi’s visit, Sharmila’s pointed remarks have added pressure on the Centre to act decisively on Amaravati.
