YSR Family’s Next-Gen Political Entry?

Share

The political legacy of the late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy seems poised to enter its third generation. Y S Sharmila, president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, is reportedly preparing for her son, Y S Raja Reddy, to step into politics in the near future. Meanwhile, speculation is rising that YSR Congress Party chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s daughter may also be considering a political career.

Currently, Jagan and his wife Bharathi are in London, where their daughters are pursuing higher education. The elder daughter, Harsha Reddy, has completed her MBA in France and is based in London, while the younger daughter, Varsha Reddy, is a Notre Dame University graduate and works for a reputed Singapore-based firm. Party insiders suggest there has been ongoing discussion about the possibility of one of Jagan’s daughters entering politics.

The push for a younger leadership face is seen as strategic, especially after the YSRCP’s unexpected setback in the 2024 assembly elections. Introducing a member of the third generation could form part of a revival strategy ahead of the 2029 general elections. Reports indicate that Jagan may discuss these plans during his London visit, possibly considering a Kadapa constituency debut for his daughter in the next Lok Sabha elections.

While this move could mark a historic continuation of the YSR family’s political lineage, party leaders remain cautious and have not confirmed whether the daughters are willing to take on active political roles.
