Rajamouli Builds ₹50 Cr Varanasi Set for Mahesh Babu’s Epic

Visionary filmmaker SS Rajamouli, known for redefining cinematic storytelling with films like Baahubali and RRR, is now working on his next magnum opus starring Superstar Mahesh Babu. Staying true to his larger-than-life style, Rajamouli has reportedly erected a massive film set worth ₹50 crore at Ramoji Film City.

This extravagant set is a replica of the ancient and sacred city of Varanasi. The decision to recreate Varanasi rather than shoot on location was driven by logistical challenges. Filming in the real city would involve managing massive crowds, securing permissions, and navigating through narrow, congested streets—especially around riverbanks and ghats.

To overcome these hurdles while maintaining authenticity, Rajamouli decided to build a near-perfect replica of Varanasi, complete with iconic temples, ghats, and riverfronts. The scale and grandeur of the set match Rajamouli’s reputation for cinematic excellence.

To put things into perspective, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, known for its luxurious sets, was made with a total budget of ₹50 crore. Other grand productions like Bajirao Mastani, Heeramandi, and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo had sets costing around ₹15–20 crore. But Rajamouli’s upcoming film is aiming for a much larger canvas—with a staggering total budget of ₹1,000 crore—making it one of the most expensive films in Indian cinema history.

Reportedly inspired by mythological elements related to Lord Hanuman, including adventures like the search for Sanjeevani herb at Mount Dronagiri, the film promises an epic narrative filled with exploration, action, and mythology.

Joining Mahesh Babu in this ambitious venture are global star Priyanka Chopra and South Indian actor Prithviraj Sukumaran in prominent roles. Music is being composed by Academy Award-winner MM Keeravaani, adding further weight to the already monumental project.

With such a colossal budget, star-studded cast, and visionary leadership, this film could redefine the benchmarks for Indian cinema.
