Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap issued a public apology on Tuesday for his controversial remarks against the Brahmin community, acknowledging that he used inappropriate language while responding in anger. The comments, which stirred a massive backlash, prompted the director to clarify his intent and take responsibility for his words.

Kashyap admitted that he had crossed a line and expressed regret for generalizing an entire community. “There are many people from the Brahmin community who have always been part of my life and have contributed positively to it. Today, they are hurt, my family is hurt, and even many intellectuals I deeply respect are disappointed by my words,” he shared in a statement on Instagram.

The filmmaker has been critical of protests from certain Brahmin groups against the release of caste-centric films like Phule, Santosh, and Dhadak 2. However, he admitted that his expression of frustration was poorly worded and did not reflect his original point of view.

“I sincerely apologize to the community I didn’t mean to offend. I used harsh words in response to a provocative comment and let anger cloud my judgment. To my friends, family, and the Brahmin community—I apologize for the tone and abusive language,” Kashyap wrote.

Acknowledging the need to manage his emotions better, he added, “I’ll work on my anger and will ensure that I use the right words if I ever address such issues again. I hope you will forgive me.”

Previously, the Gangs of Wasseypur director had revealed that he and his family received rape and death threats following his comments. “This is my apology—not for the post itself, but for that one line taken out of context and the hatred it fueled,” he had said, while asserting that his family did not deserve to be targeted for his actions.

Kashyap concluded with a strong message: “Abuse me all you want, but my family didn’t say anything. If you need an apology, here it is.”
