Game Changer Flop Sparks Credit Controversy
After nearly three years in the making, Game Changer has unfortunately turned out to be one of the biggest setbacks in Ram Charan’s career. Both Charan and producer Dil Raju placed complete trust in director Shankar, but the result—both financially and emotionally—was disappointing.
Before the film’s release, the buzz was that the core story idea came from director Karthik Subbaraj. He had even expressed pride in sharing a concept with a legendary filmmaker like Shankar, calling it a huge honor.
However, during promotions for his upcoming film Retro (releasing May 1), Karthik seems to be shifting his narrative. He clarified that he had only shared a basic one-line idea—centered around a grounded IAS officer—and that the script later evolved significantly with the involvement of other writers. He also added that box office performance is unpredictable, and filmmakers must respect audience feedback.
This change in tone hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many fans, especially from the Mega fan base, are questioning the timing of his statements. Why claim ownership before the release and distance himself after the film flopped? The contrast between his earlier and current comments has raised eyebrows.
That said, it’s also known that Shankar retained full creative control throughout the project. Reports suggest even producer Dil Raju had limited involvement during the later stages of production. So it’s possible Karthik wasn’t fully aware of how much the final story diverged from his initial idea.
Regardless, the situation reflects the complex dynamics behind big-budget films—and how credit (or blame) is often passed around when the results don’t meet expectations.
