Kollywood witnessed one of its most chaotic festival seasons this Pongal, with three major releases getting entangled in censor and legal controversies. What was expected to be a bumper box office week, led by Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film Jana Nayagan, eventually turned into a rather dull affair.

Jana Nayagan failed to reach theatres due to unresolved legal issues, while Parasakthi and Vaa Vaathiyaar managed to release only after last-minute hurdles. Unfortunately, both films were unable to secure strong word of mouth, resulting in underwhelming box office performance despite the festive advantage.

The only real spark at the box office came from actor Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, which was the final Pongal release to hit screens. The film opened to encouraging reviews and registered a decent start across Tamil Nadu. Benefiting from the festival season, its hourly advance sales picked up steadily, while online ratings remained noticeably better compared to the other releases.

Following the postponement of Jana Nayagan, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi emerged as the first choice among moviegoers. However, despite a reasonable opening, the film failed to sustain momentum due to mixed feedback. Similarly, Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar generated solid pre-release buzz, but repeated postponements hurt its prospects, and negative reports further dented collections.

At present, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is slowly gaining momentum, driven by positive word of mouth. The film’s chaotic comedy and breezy performances have resonated well with audiences. Trade experts believe that TTT is likely to take the lead at the box office during the weekend among the Pongal releases.

Ultimately, the true test for all these films will begin after the festival weekend, with Monday’s collections expected to determine their long-term box office fate.
