Sathyaraj Says Goodbye to Father Roles

Kollywood veteran Sathyaraj is a name that needs no introduction. With a career spanning across multiple languages and decades, he has established a unique identity in Indian cinema. Known for his versatile acting, he has portrayed everything from menacing villains to warm father figures with equal finesse. However, for today’s generation, he’s most famously known as Kattappa from the blockbuster Baahubali franchise — a role that gave him unprecedented pan-India fame.

Interestingly, that very role of Kattappa has now become synonymous with his image. But now, it seems Sathyaraj is ready to move in a new direction. In a recent promotional event, he opened up about his growing disinterest in playing stereotypical roles like fathers and villains. He admitted that doing the same kind of roles repeatedly has become boring. Though he hasn’t officially announced retirement from such characters, he made it clear that he is no longer keen on them and is looking for fresh, experimental roles.

Currently, Sathyaraj is said to be working on a few projects where he plays more prominent, lead roles — a shift from being just a supporting character. He appears to be leaning towards selective but substantial roles that leave a lasting impact, rather than appearing in numerous films in similar avatars. However, for this transformation to happen, writers and directors need to start crafting tailor-made lead roles for him.

Despite being 70, Sathyaraj shows no signs of slowing down. His recent appearance at the Coolie event surprised everyone — including Telugu star Nagarjuna — with his youthful, stylish look. While his contemporaries like Rajinikanth are embracing grandfather roles, Sathyaraj turned heads looking like a modern-day romantic hero.

If he truly says goodbye to ‘dad roles,’ it would leave a significant void in the industry. For a long time now, Telugu filmmakers have considered him the go-to choice for fatherly characters. If Sathyaraj says “no,” they’ll be forced to look elsewhere — a task that might not be as easy as it seems.
