Tharun Bhascker: Direction Over Acting for Tollywood Success

Tharun Bhascker made his directional debut a decade ago with Pelli Choopulu, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. However, over the years, his filmography has seen more work as an actor than as a director. He appeared in several cameos and character roles, driven by his passion for acting.
Despite showcasing solid screen presence and commanding dialogue delivery, Tharun has struggled to make a mark as an actor. Even when playing pivotal roles that advance the narrative, he has been unable to draw significant attention from audiences. His latest film, Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi, failed to generate strong pre-release buzz and ended up as a forgettable outing, raising questions about whether he should shift his focus entirely to direction.
As a filmmaker, Tharun has consistently demonstrated his talent. Following the success of Pelli Choopulu, he broke the so-called “second film syndrome” with Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi, which became a major hit and solidified his place in Tollywood. His third film, Keeda Cola, also received a decent response at the box office. These successes highlight his ability to connect with youth audiences through sensible direction and relatable storytelling. He is now working on the highly anticipated sequel, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi 2, which carries strong expectations.
Critics and audiences alike feel that Tharun’s strengths lie in direction rather than acting. The producers’ reported investment of around ₹40 crore in the ambitious sequel underscores the confidence the industry has in him as a filmmaker. If ENE 2 succeeds, it could mark a major growth phase in Tharun Bhascker’s directorial career, cementing his status as one of Tollywood’s promising young directors.
