Is Balakrishna’s ‘Daaku Maharaj’ a Box Office Failure Despite the Hype?

January 21, 2025

Nandamuri Balakrishna’s “Daaku Maharaj” made a strong start at the box office with an impressive opening; however, the film has since struggled to maintain momentum on a global scale. As a result, it is now projected to fall short of the ambitious ₹150 crore milestone.

Initially, industry trends suggested that the film could become the actor’s first to surpass the ₹150 crore mark. However, current patterns indicate that its final worldwide collections may remain well below expectations.

On a positive note, “Daaku Maharaj” has become Balayya’s highest-grossing venture this year. Before its release, Tollywood witnessed major success with Bhagavanth Kesari, which hit theaters in October 2023.

Balakrishna’s return to the big screen after over a year generated significant excitement among fans. True to expectations, the film delivered a spectacular opening, earning over ₹40 crore on its first day. Unfortunately, it failed to sustain this initial momentum.

The concurrent release of Venkatesh’s Sankranthi hit “Vasthuham” further impacted “Daaku Maharaj,” siphoning off audience interest and dampening its box office run.

In India, the film’s pace slowed considerably after the initial days, reflecting a decline in footfalls. Despite this, the film has achieved notable figures, accumulating ₹79.62 crore in its first nine days according to Sacnilk reports. Adding satellite and digital rights revenue, the domestic gross stands at approximately ₹93.95 crore.

Internationally, “Daaku Maharaj” witnessed a sharp decline after its promising start. The North American market, which often plays a crucial role in Tollywood films’ overseas earnings, has seen a significant dip, with the film currently screening in around 150 locations. Its total overseas earnings are estimated at ₹17 crore.

Combining domestic and international collections, “Daaku Maharaj” has amassed a total of ₹110.95 crore globally in its nine-day run.

As it stands, the film is unlikely to surpass the benchmark set by “Bhagavanth Kesari,” which had a total worldwide gross of ₹115.89 crore. For now, “Bhagavanth Kesari” retains its position as Balayya’s third-highest-grossing film of all time.
