Balakrishna Shifts Strategy, Picks New-Age Directors

Following the setback of Akhanda 2, Nandamuri Balakrishna has reportedly reshaped his upcoming film lineup with a more strategic approach.
As per industry buzz, Balakrishna has asked director Gopichand Malineni to put his high-budget story—based on two royal warriors—on hold for now. Instead, he has been advised to come up with a script that can be తెరకెక్కించిన on a controlled budget, with this project likely to go on floors soon.
Interestingly, Balakrishna has also given the green signal to two relatively young directors—Vivek Athreya and Vijay Kanakamedala.
Among them, Vivek Athreya’s inclusion comes as a surprise. Known for films like Brochevarevarura and Ante Sundaraniki, his style leans more towards soft, quirky storytelling rather than hardcore mass entertainers. Even his recent outing Saripodhaa Sanivaaram carried his signature narrative tone despite having some action elements. Reports suggest that he impressed Balakrishna with a strong and engaging script, which is reportedly being planned as a two-part film.
On the other hand, Vijay Kanakamedala, who made a mark with Naandi starring Allari Naresh, has also earned Balakrishna’s nod. Despite not replicating the same success in his later collaboration with Naresh, his latest script has reportedly struck a chord with the senior star.
This shift in choices raises an interesting question—why is Balakrishna opting for directors who aren’t typically known for full-fledged mass action films?
The likely answer is a conscious change in direction. Balakrishna seems keen on experimenting with different storytelling styles and expanding his cinematic space, rather than sticking strictly to his regular mass-action formula.
