Anurag Kashyap Quits Bollywood, Embraces South Cinema
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his films like Gulaal, Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, and Manmarziyaan, has officially announced his exit from Bollywood and Mumbai. He has now relocated to Bengaluru and is shifting his focus to South Indian cinema.
In a recent interview, Kashyap expressed his disappointment with the Hindi film industry, stating that creative freedom has diminished and that box office numbers have become the primary driving force. He previously called Bollywood “toxic” and revealed his intention to leave due to its increasing commercial pressures.
Kashyap criticized the industry’s obsession with unrealistic revenue targets, such as Rs. 500 crores or Rs. 800 crores, which he believes have overshadowed artistic storytelling. He also praised South Indian filmmakers for the creative liberty they enjoy, adding that Bollywood producers focus too much on commercial viability even before a film begins, which he feels takes away the essence of filmmaking.
Last year, Kashyap impressed audiences with his performances in Maharaja (Tamil) and Rifle Club (Malayalam). He is now set to appear in Dacoit, a Telugu film starring Adivi Sesh and directed by Shaniel Deo. With this transition, Kashyap is embracing the creative freedom that South Indian cinema offers.
