Ilaiyaraaja Copyright Row Settled for ₹50 Lakh

Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja, who has contributed to over 1,000 films, recently filed a copyright claim against Mythri Movie Makers for using his compositions in Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly without obtaining his permission.
In the latest development, the production house has settled the dispute by paying ₹50 lakh as compensation to the maestro.
Interestingly, Mythri Movie Makers had also used Ilaiyaraaja’s music in their film Dude. The team stated that they had legitimately purchased the rights from the music label that owns the tracks. However, Ilaiyaraaja insisted that his personal consent is required for the usage of his original works and approached the legal authorities once again seeking compensation.
After discussions, the producers agreed to a compromise and closed the issue by paying the same ₹50 lakh settlement amount.
This is not the first such case. Earlier, Ilaiyaraaja demanded ₹2 crore from the makers of Manjummel Boys for using his iconic track, but the issue was amicably resolved with a ₹60 lakh settlement.
Industry insiders believe that this could set a precedent, and other composers may follow a similar approach in the future, making it more challenging for filmmakers to reuse music without direct approval. Ilaiyaraaja maintains that his efforts are aimed at ensuring proper credit and respect for original creators.
