Telugu Big-Budget Films Face North America Distribution

Big-budget Telugu films slated for release in the coming years are facing a major shift in the North American market, as traditional distribution models begin to falter.
Producers are increasingly opting for self-distribution in the United States, as the prices being quoted for overseas rights have reached levels that distributors are unwilling to risk. Industry insiders reveal that any deal exceeding ₹50 crore is now considered a high-risk investment for North American buyers, making recovery through theatrical revenues highly uncertain.
However, several upcoming high-profile projects are being valued at nearly ₹100 crore or more for overseas rights. Films like Kalki 2, Varanasi, Dragon, and Spirit fall into this category, leaving very few distributors willing to come on board.
As a result, producers are now planning to release these films on their own by partnering with existing distribution networks in the U.S. on a commission basis rather than selling the rights outright.
For instance, the much-anticipated project featuring Allu Arjun and director Atlee is likely to be released directly by Sun Pictures. Similarly, Spirit is expected to be handled by the banner associated with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
In contrast, one of the few recent Telugu films to successfully secure a North American distribution deal was Peddi, primarily because its valuation remained below the ₹40 crore mark, making it a safer investment.
With rising budgets and soaring expectations, the overseas distribution landscape for Telugu cinema appears to be undergoing a significant transformation.
