If you owned a land near Kokapet, Shamshabad and other surrounding areas few years ago then you would have become a crorepati by now. This was the situation when Hyderabad was going through the land boom period. At that time, it was mainly farmers and milkmen who owned lands there and they got crores overnight.
With that money, they bought premium cars like Skoda and used to go to toddy shops. Now, the same scene is getting repeated in Andhra Pradesh. Farmers who have lands in the regions surrounding new capital are getting crores of hard cash. They have shifted from Santro to Mercedes Benz based on the money they are getting.
But here is the next scene. They have taken the money and are heading to Godavari districts. It is not for investment in agriculture but for betting in Kodi Pandhaalu as part of the Sankranthi festival. Though it happens at many places across the state, it is done aggressively in Godavari districts and the stakes go to few hundred crores. The sight of poor farmers arriving in Mercedes Benz is a rather strange one but thatâ the situation right now.
