During 1960s and 70s, thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao would act as a hero in many movies based on the stories of successful Novels written by then top writers. Writers like yaddhanapudi Sulochana Rani, Kommuri Sambasiva Rao were shot to fame with their Novels and a couple of their Novels were made as films.
Megastar Chiranjeevi was the most successful hero, who made many Novels as blockbuster films such as ‘Abhilasha’, ‘Dongamogudu’, ‘Rakshasudu’ and many other films. Then top writer Yandamuri Veerendranadh shot to fame with Chiranjeevi’s films. Having seen Yandamuri’s talent as a writer, Chiranjeevi gave him an opportunity to direct ‘Stuvertpuram Police Station’. But the writer misused the wonderful opportunity.
Off late, Tollywood’s filmmakers are showing no interest on making Novels as films. However, Prince Mahesh’s ‘Srimanthudu’s story was copied from a novel published as a weekly serial in Swathi. It is learnt that even today some of the Novels with very interesting themes are being published by the popular magazines like Swathi. Suryadevara Ram Mohan Rao’s ‘Gandharva Yagnam’ has an interesting fantasy element wherein a cursed Gandharva King born as a man on the Earth and does many adventures.
