A day after the Shani Shingnapur temple board decided to allow women into the sanctum sanctorum, hundreds of women visited thronged the temple premises to pour oil on the deity installed on a raised platform. The Shani Shingnapur temple had till Friday barred women from the inner sanctum.
But, interestingly, the fist woman to perform the abhishekam were Pushpak Kewadkar and Priyanka Jagtap, who broke away from Bhumatha Brigade president Trupti Desai. Trupti, who led a sustained campaign over the issue, came only later.
She and her associates reached the temple, offered prayers and participated in the daily “aarti”. Pushpak and Priyanka left the Bhumatha Brigade accusing Trupti of using the agitation to become popular. However, not every one is happy.
Village sarpanch Balsaheb Bankar said the sentiments of the villagers have been hurt. Temple’s chief trustee Anita Shetye, however, said the decision to allow women was taken to uphold the honour of the High Court.
