With the Supreme Court asking the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly to take a decision on the “regret” letter written by firebrand YSR Congress party MLA R K Roja for her alleged abusive comments against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and TDP MLA Anitha, the long-drawn battle over her one-year suspension appears to be coming to a logical conclusion. But the question remains as to who had the last laugh in the entire episode.
YSR Congress party think tank is of the view that the Supreme Court had given a rap on the government for blowing a small issue out of proportion and suspended an MLA at a time when the House was supposed to discuss several crucial issues and the government was supposed to take the entire opposition along in the development of the State.
The Opposition recalls the Supreme Court’s observation that the TDP government had taken it as a prestige issue, instead of adopting a give-and-take approach. However, the TDP leadership feels the Supreme Court directive was a slap on the face of YSR Congress party and in particular, Roja. The issue would have subsided long ago had Roja tendered an apology before the privileges committee, as other YSRC MLAs like Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy and Sridhar Reddy had done.
Instead, Roja knocked the doors of the High Court and then Supreme Court twice and finally, the courts had upheld the autonomy of the Assembly. And Roja had no option but to write a letter to the court expressing regrets over her remarks which she said she had made unintentionally. So, finally, who won the battle?
