The latest global advertisement of Pepsi received so much criticism on social media that it had to be pulled out with immediate effect.
In the ad, international model Kendall Jenner is seen posing for a photo shoot as a peace protest marches by. She then ditches the shoot, grabs a Pepsi can and joins the protest. She goes to the front and hands the can of soda to a police officer, who drinks it as the protesters cheer.
The ad was described on Pepsi’s Global YouTube channel as, “A short film about the moments when we decide to let go, choose to act, follow our passion and nothing holds us back.”
The advertisement however received huge backlash for mocking racism-related protests and hurting sentiments of black people. Following the intense criticism, Pepsi in a press release said that it was removing the ad.
“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. We clearly missed the mark and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout,” said the press release.
