NRI Passenger Burnt to Death as Driver Flees

In a tragic accident, which is also being allegedly called as a callous crime, a driver crashed his car and then left the passenger, an Indian-origin woman, to die in the car as the vehicle caught fire in the wee hours of Friday in New York.

As per media reports, firefighters found the charred body of 25-year-old Harleen Grewal, a Punjabi woman early Friday morning, in the car that almost burnt to ashes. The driver of the car, identified as Saeed Ahmad, 23, reportedly got out of the car immediately after it engulfed into flames, and allegedly without helping the woman, escaped from the scene of the incident to a hospital in another taxi. Harleen Grewal however was unable to escape and burned to death in the car.

The police traced him out at the hospital, where he was being treated for burns to his arms and legs, and detained him. He was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, overspeeding and several other offences relating to the incident.

Police told media that Ahmad had a few drinks before the accident but a blood alcohol test was negative by the time it was administered. According to witnesses, he was reportedly seen weaving in and out of traffic before his car smashed into the road divider and caught fire.

During the questioning, Ahmad reportedly said that he tried to rescue the woman, and that’s how he sustained burns to his hands.
